 The Day Iceland Stood Still

Iceland 2024, 71 min., Icelandic with German subtitles, Director: Pamela Hogan

Opening: Fri. 16.05. 20:30h, Cinema in the Brotfabrik

We are excited to open the 26th Scandinavian Film Days with a champagne reception starting at 20:00h together with you.

90 percent of all women in Iceland left their homes on October 24th, 1975. They refused to work and to take care of their homes and children. This historic strike would let the gears of Icelandic society grind to a halt and subsequently ensure that Iceland is continuously placed among the highest-ranking countries regarding equity and equality today. “The Day Iceland Stood Still” is the first to explore this significant moment in Iceland’s herstory from the perspective of the women who protested and shines a bright light on the power of collective action. “We loved our male chauvinist pigs… We just wanted to change them a little,” one activist remembers.

With the help of Hrafnhildur Gunnarsdóttir, Director Pamela Hogan reports on one of the most important events in Icelandic history and simultaneously puts the voices of the activists first.

The year is 2046 and the world is on the brink of climate-based destruction. The UN develops an incredible invention which allows them to put people and their memories back into their past selves – back to the moment they were born. The brilliant but narcissist physicist Henry is chosen to go back in time to stop climate change from escalating like it did in their time. His goal? Making his invention of a fusion reactor which can produce clean energy available to the public. Though something goes wrong when he’s sent to the past and he finds himself not in his own body, but in the body of a different boy.

Regisseur Arto Halonen depicts the struggle of identity, relationships amazingly and warns against the climate change consequences that we’re getting ever close and closer to.
