In 1979, Ester, a young Sámi woman, starts a job as a primary school teacher in Alta in northern Norway, where she hides her origins for fear of racism. She adapts, and when her work colleagues make discriminatory jokes, she laughs along politely. Her cousin Mikkhal, on the other hand, is proud of his culture and openly stands up for the rights of the Sámi. He takes Ester to a camp on the Alta River, where there is a demonstration against the imminent construction of a dam that threatens the existence of a Sámi settlement. As the situation comes to a head, Ester not only has to overcome the shame of her origins, but also finds herself in the middle of the fight against decades of discrimination against her people.

This gripping drama by director and screenwriter Ole Giæver is based on true events and shows the audience the reality of life for the Sámi in the 1970s with a great deal of emotion.
